Plasma technology
Matter changes its state when energy is supplied to it: solids become liquid and liquids become gases. Even gases can become energy-rich plasmas, the fourth state of matter, that are the states in high, unstable energy levels. When plasma comes into contact with solid materials, like organic and inorganic material, its energy acts on the surfaces and controllably changes wide variety of important physical, chemical and mechanical properties, such as the surface energy, hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity, activation, functionalization, roughness, etc. Plasma is still not incorporated in industrial and technological processes at large scale but the potential is very promising.
